It’s hard to change our minds.
We get attached to ideas. We come up with reasons why something is the way it is, and we don’t like to be wrong.
So we do mental gymnastics to avoid changing our minds.
We come up with rationalizations and justifications.
We find evidence that supports our existing beliefs. We ignore or discredit anything that doesn’t fit.
We build models in our heads of how the world works, and we use these models to explain everything we see.
When new information comes along that doesn’t fit our model, we have a choice: either update the model or discredit the information.
Most of the time, we choose to discredit the information.
It’s hard to do mental gymnastics and keep your balance.
